Formed in 2011 and featuring some of the UK’s top musicians, Rocky and the Natives are breathing new life into the British country music scene. Their first album – working title - “Lazy Waters” is scheduled for release on Yard Dog Records in July 2012. It includes 8 new and original songs and three great covers.
Rocky and the Natives are:
Andy Newmark – drums A New Yorker and Bermudian now based in the UK, Andy has been one of the world’s top session drummers for decades. He has worked with many of the world’s most important and talented artists including: John Lennon, Yoko Ono, George Harrison, Sly and the Family Stone, David Bowie, Carly Simon, Eric Clapton, Randy Newman, Gene Parsons and many more.
Chris Godden – electric guitars/lap steel A well known figure in British Country music, Chris started out as a keyboard player with soul outfit the Way in the late 60’s, switching to guitar with successful UK touring country rock band Pass the Buck in the early 70’s. Since then he has worked extensively on the country music circuit, including working in tandem with legendary pedal steel player the late Gordon Huntley. Chris has also been a go to guitarist for many visiting US country stars. With Malcolm Barnard he has been a principle song writer with Rocky and the Natives.
Geoffrey Richardson – violin, mandolin, banjo, flute A hugely talented multi- instrumentalist, Geoffrey has worked for many years with Caravan alongside Jim Leverton. He has also worked and recorded with artists across the musical spectrum including: Bob Geldof, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Murray Head, Chris de Burgh and Ozark Mountain Daredevils.
Jim Leverton – bass guitar, keyboards, acoustic guitar Jim is one of the unsung heroes of British rock n roll. A professional musician for over 50 years, he has worked with many top artists in the UK and America including Noel Redding’s Fat Mattress who toured with Jimi Hendrix, Joe Brown, Rory Gallagher and for 14 years alongside Steve Marriott.
Malcolm Barnard – vocals Following early success as a sax player with 60’s pop and soul bands Aesop’s Fables and The Way, Malcolm switched full time to vocals with Tarquin, Winkle Bill and Pass the Buck and spent time with top French rock band Roto Magus before returning to the UK. He shares with Chris Godden the main song writing role for the first Rocky and the Natives album.
What does Tight As mean to you?
Tight As was John at play! It’s a tongue in cheek, uncomplicated rockabilly type song, glancing back at influences from the 50’s. It fits beautifully into Rocky and the Natives’ ironic country style music. A straightforward but timeless track.
What does John Lennon mean to you?
A transistor radio sneaked into school listening to “Love Me Do”. A front seat in the cinema for “Hard Day’s Night”. Back seat of the car with “Cry Baby Cry”. A sense of the surreal. Seeing John and Yoko outside Rochester Cathedral, England, December 1969. Double Fantasy. Finding time to find ourselves. Mortality and the chance to play John’s music into our 70th decade!
