Graham Foster - the sculptor

Graham Foster

Born in 1970, Bermudian artist Graham Foster is best known for his huge mural ‘The Hall of History’ inside the Commissioner's House at the Bermuda National Museum in Dockyard. The two storey, 1000 square foot interior mural depicts five centuries of Bermudian history, and took approximately 7000 hours (over 3 years) to complete. On November 25th 2009, Her Majesty The Queen, officially opened the Hall of History mural and on this occasion was presented with a painting by the artist.

A professional artist since 1995, Mr. Foster was educated at The Bermuda College and The Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston.

His paintings tend to follow one of two directions - one inspired by Bermuda’s flora, fauna, architecture, and people, captured in a characteristically surreal style. The other style is looser, more expressionistic, and often influenced by dreams and the subconscious.

He is also a sculptor, working primarily in welded and forged steel, strongly influenced by the tribal arts of Africa and the Pacific Rim. In 2002, his welded steel tryptich "21st century Fetish family' was purchased for the Bermuda National Gallery's permanent collection

In 2009, he won the $10000 Charman Grand Prize for his painting ‘The Mechanics of Extinction’.His solo exhibitions include The Masterworks Foundation and the Ace Gallery. He has also shown work in many of the Bermuda National Gallery Bienniels.

Collections include Bausch and Lombe New York, The Bermuda Anglican Cathedral, HSBC, The Bank of Butterfield, Ace Insurance, LOM, Allianz Re, Bermuda Commercial Bank and The Masterworks Foundation.

A large selection of Graham Foster prints are available at The Art Centre, Dockyard opposite the Maritime Museum entrance, and The Little Gallery at Spinnakers, 99 Front Street. All prints are titled and signed by the artist.
